Leaning Towards A More Ethical Approach To Beauty

Ethical beauty ideas

Throughout last year, I began moving away from my much-loved Dr Organic Argan oil, in favour of adding a little more diversity to my skincare routine.

Staying with facial oils, but trying new or niche brands whilst becoming more conscious of the ingredient list. I’m now a real devotee of not only using natural oils to massage, nourish and hydrate my skin but also to cleanse with.

Knowing a product is ethically sourced, organic and 100% natural is always something of a comfort to me. However, along with what I call “maintenance skincare” I’ll continue to use targeted anti-ageing products in the form of creams and serums, but for now, I’m enjoying broadening my skincare horizon with fragrant, essential oil-infused ethically sourced products.

If like me, your skin is dry –  add some oil, if your skin is oily – add more oil. Yes, you read that right.

Contrary to popular belief, oil attracts oil and can actually help rebalance your skin, bringing back equilibrium. Rose oil is particularly good for those suffering from excess sebum as its anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce redness or inflammation which sometimes goes hand-in-hand with oilier skin.

What beauty lover doesn’t dream of creating their very own brand of organic skincare?

That’s exactly what Pink & Green founder Carol Aplin did. Working as a holistic therapist for many years, Carol wanted to combine her wonderful ethos of self-care with her love of all-natural, organic ingredients to create her brand Pink & Green skincare. Now a flourishing, award-winning British brand, Carol’s feel-good, 100% organic oils are designed for women with the intention of allowing the basic need of taking care of our skin, to become a more enjoyable, sensory experience.

Pink & Green organic ethical facial oil

I’ve been trying Pink & Green Rich Facial Oil for dry skin over the last few weeks and I must admit, there’s really nothing to dislike.

This wonderful oil is housed in an attractive Cobalt blue glass bottle with a pipette applicator. Generally, essential oils are kept in either amber or blue-tinted bottles which offer protection from light damage, keeping all those therapeutic ingredients stable. Even so, natural oils are best kept away from sunlight.

Pink & Green claim: This nourishing formula helps to prevent moisture loss and the formation of fine lines. With Jojoba and macadamia oils, combined with essential oils of lavender and geranium. A natural SPF of 5 further enhances its benefits.

I love to use facial oils at bedtime, it really helps me relax and prepare for sleep. After cleansing, I take a few minutes to massage the oil into my skin, taking in the aroma of lavender and geranium. Benefiting from both the lymphatic drainage the action of massage brings, but also all those skin-loving ingredients. The oil absorbs readily, and on waking my skin feels hydrated and nourished.

Ermana Revive Face Oil

Ethical Beauty The Beauty Spyglass

Another British brand that I wasn’t aware existed is Ermana. Their range of skincare products is made from a blend of botanicals and all things natural. Ermana claims: As many skincare products in today’s market contain some rather questionable ingredients we saw the need to create products that are 100% natural. We do not use parabens, sulphates or any artificial fragrances or colourings. We do not use artificial preservatives, instead, we use vitamin E, which naturally preserves our products where necessary, and we do not test on animals.

Ermana oils and balms are made from a rich blend of botanical oils and waxes that are packed with natural vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega oils and fatty acids, which are essential to keep the skin hydrated and nourished.

Revive really is a gorgeous oil, packed with natural goodness, my skin loved it! I found a slightly subtler aroma – but still, the infusion of Frankincense makes it a little different as this ingredient isn’t one I come across too often. Again, I keep my facial oils on my bedside table as I like to massage the oil into my skin right before sleep.

“I’m not the best sleeper and often wake well before my alarm”.

when I do, I always reach for my oil and apply more. Delivering a good level of hydration Revive oil softens and smoothes my skin. Ermana natural skincare is definitely a brand to watch. If you would like to add some natural oils to your routine, Ermana is a great place to start. Visit ermana.co.uk to find out more.

Bria Organic Skin Cream

Bria claims their soothing, repairing & highly moisturising skin cream is effective for dry skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Organic Borage Oil replenishes, Rosehip Oil repairs, Chickweed Oil cools and helps ease the itch while Shea Butter protects. A lighter, vegan version of our best-selling Relief Repair Replenish Balm. 100% natural & organic, fragrance-free and gentle enough for super sensitive skin. can be used on the face and body including sensitive areas such as the eyelids. Other uses include helping to soothe chapped, dry skin, scars, burns and cradle cap – (for babies over 1 month of age)

Who doesn’t love a good multi-purpose balm?

Everyone should have on in their cupboard, with so many uses, I’ve always got at least one on the go. I’ve been trying Bria Organic Relief And Replenish cream for a couple of months and using it mainly for my hands and cuticles. I really do suffer from dry hands, particularly at this time of year when the wind is colder and harsh on the skin. I don’t always want to wear gloves when I’m out and about so coming home and slathering this cream on has been a skin saviour for me. It literally melts into the skin and leaves my hands soothed and softened. It’s fragrance-free and although it appears solid, it will change consistency with fluctuating temperatures, this won’t affect the efficacy but it’s best kept away from heat sources. I love finding new skincare brands which are natural and organic, it’s so good knowing they can do no harm to your skin. I love using a good facial oil so when I run out I might have to check one of these out! The multi purpose balm sounds perfect for my dry hands too, I’ve suffered with it so bad this winter I think it’s been the worst ever and my hand cream just isn’t sorting it out!

The balm has been amazing for my dry hands! Sometimes you need something richer than a hand cream. It’s lasted really well too. x

The Organic Skin cream sounds great especially as it is an all-rounder. I am becoming more diverse with my skincare as well as my makeup lately and tying to come out of my comfort zone. There are some amazing brands out there and it’s good to try other things too x

I love discovering niche skincare brands so thank you for the post Samantha! And facial oils are one of my favourite products. I think natural and organic brands are becoming increasingly appealing as their performance and sensory experience becomes just as good (if not better) than standard beauty products.

I think oils are an amazing product for skincare but sadly my skin is combination oily, so oils just make me feel really greasy. I can just about get away with using oils in winter on dry patches though.
