Is Your Home In Need Of Hygge?

Hygge lifestyle ideas

Have you jumped on the Hygge bandwagon yet? As Hygge is sweeping the nation, I couldn’t help but notice the trend and I wanted to know more. It’s not a new concept and, in fact, dates back to the 18th century. Hygge is actually a Norwegian word that loosely translates to Well-being. In Denmark where long days with minimal light is the norm’ Hygge living brings warmth and comfort to everyday life. The Danes are said to be the happiest people so they must be doing something right! Let’s follow their lead and embrace our own way of Hygge living – give in to that Danish pastry or chocolate twist, it’s ok, your Hygg-ing! Before we delve any further, how on earth is Hygge pronounced?

Firstly, try saying “Hoo-gah”,  now say it a little faster with less emphasis on the double oo. “Hooga” You’re now saying the English word “hug” but with your own twist on a Danish accent. Now we’ve got that settled, let’s find out more…

How To Hygge…

Winter is here and there’s no better time to bring Hygge into your home. In some ways, we are halfway there already – simply because at this time of year we naturally want to feel cosy, but Hygge isn’t just about fluffy throws and snuggly slippers, it’s also a feeling of well-being. Light some candles, hang up the fairy lights and snuggle under a blanket. Wrap up in warm clothing and head out for a winter’s walk with family or friends – enjoy the countryside. Serve up a milky hot chocolate on your return…That’s Hygge living.

Light Up Your Day

I love lighting up my non-toxic scented candles and tea lights around my home in the evenings, particularly during the autumn/winter months when the evenings draw in. Open Fires are also very Hygge – if you’re lucky enough to have one. We have a log burner which, if the door is open could be classed as an open fire. It’s in our “snug” room which isn’t the room we actually “snug” in as we tend to sit in the lounge, however, we can see it glowing and hear it crackle which is just as lovely.

Loungewear Is Hygge…

Let’s get comfy… You’ll never see me lounging in jeans, or wearing a bra beyond 7 pm for that matter, cosy evenings at home are all about comfort, and this goes hand in hand with Hygge living. Feeling warm and comfortable around the house always gives a good feeling I find. Whenever I return home, I’ll change into my “comfies” as soon as possible and that’s me done for the evening.

Listen To Music At home…

If you love to fill your home with your favourite tunes, switch up the genre to something a little more relaxing or easy listening. A favourite in my home is London Grammar, in particular, their album “If You Wait”  iTunes say – Inspired by ambient dubstep and acts such as Everything But the Girl and Portishead, London Grammar’s If You Wait is white-hot, a melancholy triumph of mood and nuance. With mournful pianos and jazzy breakbeats, soaring strings, and delicate guitars—all of it anchored by Hannah Reid’s freight train of a voice. Don’t be put off by the word melancholy, the album really is beautiful. If you’d like a more relaxed way of life, slow down your music tempo and see what happens.

Retailers are cashing in on the trend and there are some lovely books around to give either as a gift or just to keep for yourself. I’ve picked three of my favourites…
