Dermaplaning with Shiseido For Baby Smooth Skin

Dermaplaning tips and advice

I imagine you’re here because you share the same facial hair frustrations?

Vellus hair (the fine, soft hair which you’ll notice on your face in sunlight) isn’t particularly unsightly, or noticeable but if you want rid of it in favour of super smooth skin so, let’s look at dermaplaning.

Firstly, take care…

Before I go any further, please be aware that dermaplaning is not for everybody, if you have particularly sensitive skin, or active spots/acne it’s definitely not recommended. It is also a treatment that you may want to have performed by a qualified aesthetician/beautician. However, If you’re like me,  you’ll probably want to try dermaplaning yourself, and start reaping the many benefits.

Deep exfoliation…

Dermaplaning removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells, giving deeper exfoliation to reveal baby soft skin. The process also triggers cell regeneration and stimulates collagen production due to the dermabrassive effect. Removing the dead skin cells and vellus hair from the face gives a smooth, clean feel. Skincare products may be absorbed more readily and makeup application is smoother.

If you suffer from blackheads the blade literally pulls out those plugs of dead skin cells as you gently glide over problem areas.

My blade of choice is the Shiseido facial razor. I’ve also tried Tinkle blades, but found them pretty useless, in all honesty. Shiseido is far more effective and I wouldn’t use anything else now. The blades come in a packet of three and they’re affordable at around £6.99 per pack of three razors or £13.59 for two packs. Get yours here on Amazon.

Remember, the blade is very sharp and if you run it over one area more than once or twice you may end up with sore skin, just as I did the first time I tried it. I found a good light where I could see the hairs and just went at it like a bull in a china shop. I wanted baby smooth skin and ended up with a very sore face instead. As if that weren’t enough, I also took the blade to the backs of my hands and knuckles, my skin was left sore and angry-looking and remained so whilst it healed.

I looked like I’d been in a scuffle and it was my own fault entirely. I didn’t realise the harm you can inflict if you aren’t careful. A lesson learned indeed. Nowadays, I’m much more sensible.

Myth – The Hair Will Grow Back Thicker/Courser.

Contrary to popular belief, these vellus hairs do not grow back thicker or courser. The razor does not affect the follicles (where the hairs are produced) the “make-up” of our hair cannot be altered by shaving. However, during the shaving process, you are cutting off the hairs with a blade which creates a sharp end, just as you do when you shave your legs, the hairs feel sharper as they start to grow through once again. That said, if you decide not to dermaplane again the tips will soon soften and return to their original form as they continue to grow as normal. You’ll have your peach fuzz moustache back in no time.

How To Use…

For best results start with clean dry skin, angle the blade downwards and pull the skin taut. Move it across your skin without covering the same area more than once or twice at a time. As long as you are very careful you will find a way which works for you. Fuzz-like hair will gather on the razor so when necessary clean it off and start again. It’s not generally recommended to dermaplane your nose, but I do. Again, you need to do your own research and see what’s best for you. In terms of how often, I Dermaplane at least twice a month but it’s a personal choice. I like to do the backs of my hands too, particularly for the skin renewal effect.

If you prefer to use a facial oil with the razor, that’s also an option. Simply apply a thin layer of oil to the face and use your razor in the usual way as described above

Following treatment, apply a natural serum or oil just to help the skin settle and recover.

Also, if you’re heading out, remember to use a good SPF as the skin will be a little more sun-sensitive for a day or so. Each razor is good for a few shaves and can be cleaned with a disinfectant solution. I have an antiseptic spray which I use to keep mine clean between uses. The razors also come with a little cap for hygiene reasons and to protect the blade. Just to reiterate, if this is something you think you might try, please do be careful, particularly the first time. Use with caution until you find your way. You’ll soon gain confidence as you go along.

I’ve seen so much about this lately and I’m really interested. Unfortunately I can’t, due to acne, but I think the results and benefits sound incredible! I’d also have to get a beautician to do it for me, I can barely trust myself to shave my legs!

Aw maybe when your skin heals you could try it gently. As you say, maybe try it with a beautician first to see if you like the result. If I can manage it sure you’ll be fine! X

This is a very useful post and you had me cringing at the thought of what happened when you first used this…ow!

i must admit I’m a tad scared to use something like this and could imagine doing exactly what you did even after the warning. That said, i think it’s great that there are so many remedies and solutions out there.

I was so annoyed with myself for being so rough with my skin but I won’t make that mistake again. It can seem a little daunting to start with but you soon get used to it and how much pressure you need etc. It’s definitely worth it! x

I’ve never tried it but am very curious. I have Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome so suffer with hairs on my chin. Not sure if they’re too coarse for dermaplaning though? I currently just opt for waxing every few weeks! lol Great review xx

Ah okay yes not sure about courser hairs, certainly the fluffy hair doesn’t stand a chance. Maybe stick to waxing if that works for you! Xx

I have PCOS too and I have the same problem. I do shave my hairs though as they are very think and very dark. Am going to try dermaplaning and hope that it works on those hairs because that would be such an easy fix! It’s something I’m really embarrassed by and I am willing to try anything to help at this point!
